What is Electrodiagnostic Testing, also known as NCS and EMGs?
A Nerve Conduction Study assesses the speed and intensity of electrical signals that travel along nerves. Electromyography (EMG) assesses the electrical activity of muscles.
NCS and EMG tests are important diagnostic tools to detect causes of pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness.
What to Do Before Your NCS/EMG Test:
• Please bathe or shower on the day of your test.
• Do not use any body lotions or oils prior to the test.
What to Expect During the NCS/EMG Testing:
• You will be changing into a gown that is open toward the back.
• During the NCS procedure, you will lie or sit, depending on what area of the body is being tested. Recording electrodes are attached to your skin. A stimulator is held against your skin and a tiny electrical impulse is sent through your nerves. This stimulus is unusual, but harmless.
• During the EMG procedure, you will be lying down. A needle electrode is gently inserted into the muscle and electrical muscle activity is recorded. Muscles are testing at rest and during contraction with movement.
• After your NCS/EMG test, you may return home, or carry out your normal activity.
Pre-Testing Instructions:
• Allow approximately one hour for the test.
• Please inform your physician of any medications you are taking, especially any blood thinners.
• Be sure to inform your physician if you have diabetes, a pacemaker, or skin infection.
• You may eat your normal meals at your usual times.
