What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a swelling of a body part, usually a limb. It may develop after damage to the lymph nodes due to surgery, biopsy, trauma, infection or radiation treatment. Less commonly, lymphedema may occur due to a congenitally underdeveloped lymphatic system.
Can Lymphedema be Treated?
While no cure exists for lymphedema, effective treatments exist that can control the condition and prevent progression.
Are You at Risk for Developing Lymphedema?
If you have undergone treatment for breast cancer, your risk of developing lymphedema is 20% over your lifetime. Those who have undergone treatment for other forms of cancer, where lymph nodes were removed, are also at increased risk for developing lymphedema.
