What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy focuses on the restoration, maintenance, and promotion of optimal physical function.
Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers evaluate patients to treat musculoskeletal problems. An individualized plan of care is established outlining the therapeutic interventions that will be utilized to help achieve the functional goals.
Therapeutic interventions typically employed in physical therapy include: exercise, manual therapy techniques, and modalities (i.e. hot/cold packs, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, traction).
What to Expect:
Your first visit will last approximately one hour. During this visit, the initial therapy evaluation is performed. A Physical Therapist of Athletic Trainer will assess your motion, strength, flexibility, balance, and posture. Based on your functional goals and physical impairments noted during the evaluation, an individualized physical therapy plan of care will be established. This plan of care outlines the specific therapeutic interventions which will be used to decrease your physical impairments and attain your functional goals. You will also be instructed in a home exercise program.
The frequency and duration of your physical therapy visits are typically prescribed by your physician. Generally, patients are seen three times per week during their rehabilitation program.
At your last prescribed physical therapy session, a reevaluation will be performed. A Physical Therapist or Athletic Trainer will assess you again and compare your final results to those from your initial evaluation. Your home exercise program will be reviewed, and if appropriate, progressed.
Physical Therapy Instructions:
Be sure to wear comfortable workout type clothes to physical therapy sessions (i.e. tennis shoes, sweats, t-shirts, jogging suits, shorts).
If you have a knee injury, shorts are recommended so that the knee joint can be easily viewed.
If you have a shoulder injury, a tank top is recommended so that the shoulder can be easily viewed.
If you are late for an appointment, you may be required to reschedule.
